TAPI (Turkmenistan- Afghanistan- Pakistan- India) is a mega project to transport gas from Turkmenistan to Pakistan and India via Afghanistan. Also known as Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline. This is a pipeline project which is under construction. The project was started on 13th December, 2015 and expected to be completed by December, 2018. The total estimated cost for this pipeline is about $10 Billion.
Turkmenistan is one of the countries rich in natural resources and in terms of natural gas it is on fourth number all around the world. Turkmenistan, is now in need of some market to export its gas. Pakistan and India are thickly populated countries and their energy requirement is increasing every year. Therefore, this pipeline project is considered as one of excellent project to fulfill the energy requirements of the developing countries.
Total length of this pipeline will be 1814 Km starting from Galkynysh Gas Field in Mary Province in Turkmenistan. The route will be in phases;
- Cross into Afghanistan from Herat
- Pass through Kandahar- Chaman border into Pakistan
- Chaman to Quetta, Multan
- Multan to India via Fazilka border
Diameter of this pipeline will be 56 inches, while total transportation capacity of gas is 33 billion m3 annually. This contract will remain intact for thirty years, and Afghanistan will receive 5 billion m3 annually. While, India and Pakistan will be provided 14 billion m3 each.
